Abstract
1,237,466. Vacuum Switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 30 Oct. 1968 [6 Nov., 1967], No. 51501/68. Headings HIN and H2. A vacuum switch comprises relatively movable contacts 20, 24, annular arc runners 30, 36 surrounding the movable contacts, a trigger gap 47 mounted in one of the arc runners and means (not shown) for driving the contacts into engagement when an arc has been established between the arc runners due to the application of a signal across the trigger gap. Both arc runners may be provided with a trigger gap 47, as shown, the gaps being aligned or offset. The arc runners are so shaped and mounted as to cause the current through them to follow a bowed path so as to provide a magnetic field to keep the arc off the contacts. The outer periphery of the arc runners may be provided with arc-rotating slots (not shown). The contacts are closed by a solenoid connected in series with the contacts.
