Abstract

972,059. Gas-blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 29, 1962 [Nov. 3, 1961], No. 40713/62. Heading H2B. A gas-blast switch of the " puffer " type has a movable cylinder 20 and a movable piston 21 which are interconnected by mechanical linkage 25 arranged so that when the contacts 10, 11 are opened, the piston and cylinder move in opposite directions so as to rapidly reduce the volume in the cylinder and provide an adequate blast. As shown, the movable contact 11 may be carried by the cylinder 20 which .is moved on a guide tube 41 by an operating crank 14. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown), the movable contact is carried by the piston. The mechanical linkage 25 may be arranged so as to produce an increased rate of travel of the piston or cylinder after the contacts have separated. The switch construction described is similar to that of Specification 904,160. U.S.A. Specification 2,913,559 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 904,160.
