Abstract

564,949. Gas-blast switches. GORDON, H. H. (Allmanna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget). June 15, 1943, No. 9516. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 30, 1943.] [Class 38 (v)] In order that the contacts of a pneumaticallyactuated, gas-blast switch shall not open until the full gas-pressure is available for quenching the arc, the gas is initially admitted to both sides of the contact-operating piston, so that the full pressure is available at the contacts, whereupon the space behind the piston is exhausted to enable contact-separation to take place. In a double-break arrangement provided with an isolator 6, 7, spherical movable contacts 17, 18 co-operating with nozzle-shaped fixed contacts 15, 16 are operated by pistons 21, 22 in cylinders 23, 24, which intercommunicate via orifice 27 so that when the blast valve 2 and valve 3 are, opened to break the circuit, gas is available on both sides of both pistons, the valve 3 being then moved to exhaust the two cylinders to atmosphere and allow the contacts 17, 18 to open. When piston 22 moves past orifice 27, the spring 25 recloses contact 17, leaving 16 open while the valve 3 is open to atmosphere. The break 17, 15 is shunted by a resistance 30 so that the break 16, 18 has only a reduced current to open and nozzle 16 is accordingly reduced. Cylinders 23, 24 are carried on insulator 29 on the metal cap 13 supporting contact 15, the cap 13 being mounted on an insulator 12 on a metal case 10 on a further insulator 11.
