Abstract

1,264,756. Gas blast circuit breakers. SIEMENS A.G. 16 March, 1970 [14 March, 1969], No. 12597/70. Heading H1N. A circuit breaker has two relatively movable contacts one at least of which is hollow, receiving the other in sliding contact, and having an arc quenching medium compressed by a cylinder and piston arrangement, during the opening operation and before the contacts open, to substantially at least 40% of the original volume. In Fig. 2, the closed and open positions are shown on the right and left respectively of the central axis of chamber 1 containing SF 6 under pressure and supporting a fixed hollow contact 2. A movable contact 3 is connected to metal blast cylinder 4 actuated by a drive rod (5) via inertial mass 35. Insulating nozzle arrangement 8 is connected to the cylinder, the rim of the nozzle defining with the arcing tip 10 of the contact 3 an annular clearance (11). Parallel contact fingers 14 bear, in the closed position, against the outside of the cylinder forming a parallel current path which is broken before the separation of the main contacts. The cylinder slides on a fixed piston 17 and metal spacer 32. The axial length of the sliding contact surface between contact 3 and the fixed contact 2 is substantially half the total stroke of the contact 3. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the contact 2 is solid and the nozzle arrangement not tapered.
