Abstract

858,791. Gas-blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 4, 1959 [March 7, 1958], No. 7513/59. Class 38 (5). In a gas-blast circuit-interrupter having a pumping cylinder in the arcing chamber, the differential piston thereof has a lost-motion connection with the moving contact which has a passage venting into an orifice passage in the piston when the contacts are closed and which is closed after the lost-motion has been taken-up during contact separation. The interrupter housing, which preferably contains sulphur hexafluoride, comprises two cylindrical insulators 2, 3 secured and sealed to a base 27, connector plates 6 and 19 and a cap 17. The moving contact 7 passes through an opening 8 in a boss 59 on the plate 6, and the boss has threaded thereto an insulating cylinder 57 which receives one end of the differential piston 54. The piston has lost-motion on the end of the contact 7 limited by a recess 63, and its larger end is provided with a piston-ring 61 engaging the inner wall 60 of the insulator 2. A bracket 10 on the cap 17 supports the fixed contact 9 which is biased towards the moving contact by a spring 11. When the contact 7 is moved downward the contact 9 moves with it initially but the piston 54 is not moved until the lost-motion 63 is taken up. The contact 7 and piston 54 then move together and under heavy current conditions the pressure on the upper large surface 55 of the piston due to the arc assists the external operating-mechanism in compressing the gas in the cylinder 57 which is forced through passages 65 to the arcing region 52. A valve 70 is provided so that the gas in the cylinder 2 does not oppose its movement when light currents are being interrupted. Passages 49, 50, 51 in the contact 7 are sealed by the piston when the contact is moved downward but during closing movement they are opened and allow gas to flow. The plate 6 is connected to the contact 7 by rollers as described in Specification 847,968, and the contact is moved by links 34, 38, the former carrying rollers 35 in slots 36 in the base 27 and the latter being keyed to a shaft 39 rotatable by an arm 40 outside the interrupter.
