Abstract

854,254. Gas-blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Jan. 8, 1959 [Jan. 10, 1958], No. 733/59. Class 38 (5). A gas-blast switch has a moving contact 9 and a fixed nozzle contact 8, the gas blast exhausting through the nozzle into a chamber 16 where the rise in pressure causes the separation of isolating contacts 10, 11. The Figure shows two of the above interrupting and isolating units extending from a high-pressure reservoir 3 carried by an insulating pedestal 4. To open the switch, a valve 38 is actuated so as to connect the space between pistons 17 to the lowpressure region within the pedestal 4. The high-pressure gas in the reservoir 3 acts through apertures 49 on the outer faces of the pistons 17 and causes them to move against the bias of a spring 18 to open the contacts 9. When the pressure in each chamber 16 is sufficient, a piston 20 is moved against the bias of a spring 22 to move the contact 10 to its open position and to move a valve element 27 to a position in which it closes the vent 25 from the cylinder 21 containing the piston 20. When the valve 38 is restored to the position shown, the space between the pistons 17 is connected to the reservoir 3 so that the spring 18 moves the contacts 9 back to their closed position, but the pressure in the chambers 16 maintains the isolating contacts 10, 11 open. A valve 55 may be operated to vent the pressure from the chambers so that the springs 22 may close the isolating contacts 10, 11.
