Abstract

833,559. Gas-blast switches. I-T-E CIRCUIT BREAKER CO. Nov. 19, 1957 [June 21, 1957], No. 36032/57. Class 38 (5) [Also in Group XXXVI] A double-break recirculating gas-blast switch has axially aligned fixed and movable contacts 17, 38 housed within a tank 11 which is connected to a high pressure gas source so that the contacts are surrounded by high pressure gas. The movable contacts 38 are carried by pistons 37 which are slidable in a cylinder 30. Normally, the pressure within the cylinder is the same as that within the tank and the contacts are maintained closed by springs 45. To open the switch, a pipe 34 is connected to a low-pressure reservoir so that the pressure within the cylinder is reduced and the pressure in the tank acting on the pistons causes them to move towards each other to open the contacts. A gas-blast flows from the tank through each movable contact 38, openings 55 in plates 46 and the pipe 34 to the low-pressure reservoir until the pistons 37 rest on seats 56 which close the outlets from the contacts 38. To reclose the switch the pipe 34 is disconnected from the low pressure reservoir and connected to the high pressure source so that the pressures on both sides of each piston are equalized and the springs 45 are able to reclose the contacts. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates the external gas pipe and valve gear arrangement for a threepole or six-break assembly.
