Abstract
869,516. Gas-blast switches. I-T-E CIRCUIT BREAKER CO. June 26, 1958 [Dec. 16, 1957], No. 20565/58. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXVI] A recirculating gas-blast switch has insulating bushings 12, 13 passing through opposite ends of an elongated tank 11, a stud 14 extending through the bushing 12 and carrying a fixed contact 16, and a conducting tube 15 extending through the bushing 13 and housing an axially movable contact assembly 20 which is electrically connected to the tube 15 by a stationary bridging contact assembly 25. The assembly 20 includes main and arcing contacts formed by concentric tubes 42, 43 which are slit at their ends to provide segments which are biased by springs. The contact tubes are secured to a tube 29 which extends from a differential piston assembly 30. The tank 11 is connected to a high-pressure source of gas so that the contacts are always surrounded by high-pressure gas. When the contacts are closed the gas acts through the tube 29 and through a bore in the piston assembly 30, so that pressure gas from the tank 11 acts on the left face of the larger piston 34 as well as on the right face of the smaller piston 33, the space between the pistons being connected to a low-pressure reservoir. To open the contacts, the cylinder 72 housing the larger piston 34 is vented through a spring biased valve 83, a pipe 78 and a blast valve (not shown) to the low-pressure reservoir so that the pressure gas in the tank 11 acting on the smaller piston 33 opens the contacts, a blast of gas flowing through the movable contacts, the tube 29 and the piston assembly 30 to the low-pressure reservoir until the piston 34 closes the valve 83. The contacts are closed by closing the blast valve and opening a further valve which connects the pipe 78 to the high-pressure source so that high-pressure gas acts on the larger piston 34 and closes the contacts. Fig. 8 (not shown) illustrates the external valve gear and equipment for a multi-pole or multi-break assembly.
