Abstract

1,049,497. Gas blast switches. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Oct. 15, 1964 [Oct. 17, 1963], No. 42073/64. Heading H2B. In a gas blast circuit breaker of the kind having two nozzle contacts 1, 2 separable in a chamber permanently filled with compressed gas and each associated with an outlet blast valve, the nominally fixed contact 2 is resiliently mounted and its follow-up action is employed to operate the associated blast valve obviating the need for transmission pipes or rods between the contacts and reducing the chance of creepage currents. As contact 1 is drawn upwards by a conventional linkage (not shown) contact 2 follows under the action of a spring 22 and the resultant internal gas pressure acting on a valve member 4. As the member 4 rises away from seat 10 a blast of gas escapes through an outlet 6a. In its upper position an abutment 4c on member 4 drives a valve member 20 upwards cutting off chamber 21 from channels 14a, 12 and outlet 6a and connects it through channels 15, 14b and 5a to the high pressure gas in the contact chamber 27 which drives valve member 4 back to the position shown. Towards the end of this last movement a ring 25 on member 4 draws the contact 2 back downwards to increase the gap, a damping piston 24 preventing rebound. During reclosure of the contacts, contact 1 drives contact 2 and thus valve member 20 back to the position shown.
