Abstract

919,798. Fluid-blast switches. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. March 7, 1961 [March 16, 1960], No. 8342/61. Class 38 (5). A fluid-blast switch has concentric insulating tubes 5, 6 defining between them a channel 8 which terminates in a nozzle-like gap 9 adjacent the fixed contacts 13, 14, and a movable contact assembly comprising a central arc-electrode 17 and a coaxial tubular contact 15, this assembly being arranged to produce fluid blasts between the contact 15 and electrode 17, and through the gap 9. In the arrangement shown, a piston 21 is provided at the base of the electrode 7 so that when the moving contact assembly is moved downwardly by an operating rod 16, the fluid below the piston is forced through openings 7 into the channel 8 and out through the gap 9 on to the fixed contacts. Fluid also passes through annular spaces 23 to provide the blast flowing between the electrode 17 and contact 15. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), the tubular contact 15 is extended to form the operating member and moves over a fixed piston which causes the blast to flow between the electrode 17 and the contact 15. In this arrangement a collar on the outside of the tubular contact 15 acts as a piston to force fluid through the channel 8 and gap 9.
