Abstract

686,207. Gas-blast circuit-interrupters. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN. Nov. 28, 1950 No. 29065/50. Class 38 (v) The arcing-chamber of an interrupter is formed by the annular space between a fixed insulating tube 13 and a movable insulating tube 7 slidable on the contact rod 1, both tubes preferably being formed from gas-evolving material. To open the contacts, the tube 7 is moved upwards by a crank 8 so as to lift contacts 2 from the rod 1, and the arc formed is forced along the latter into the tube 13 by continued movement of the tube 7, the gases produced exhausting through an outlet 27 and the upper end of tube 13, and cooling devices being fitted if desired. The arc is preferably extinguished as the tube 7 reaches a stop 11, continued movement of the tube moving the contact 1 upwards so as to separate from contacts 4 to produce an isolating break. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown), part of the arc is shunted by a resistance connected between contacts 2 and an annular auxiliary electrode let into the tube 13 between its ends. In a further modification Fig. 5 (not shown) the auxiliary electrode has outlets opening into a cooling device formed of metal rings, all of which are connected to the resistance. The contact rod may have an insulating extension 23 (Fig. 6) also of gas-evolving material, so that a second arcing-chamber co-axial with the first is formed, thereby simplifying the extinction of small currents. The resistance 19 is connected to a flame arresting device 24. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the tube 13 has an annular orifice opening into a chamber where the gases are deionized prior to flowing back into the tube 13 when the pressure therein drops at current zero.
