Abstract
494,044. Fluid-blast switches. AKT.- GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. July 30, 1937, No. 21240. Convention date, July 30, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] A switch in which the arc is extinguished by a flowing medium and with at least one hollow contact through which the medium flows away, has its main contacts bridged by a protective resistance which is put in circuit by means of an auxiliary contact swept over by the arc, the auxiliary contact forming a constructional part of the hollow switch contact within which it is arranged centrally so as to leave an annular free space between it and the hollow contact. In Fig. 1, the auxiliary contact e for resistance f is in the form of a rod arranged concentrically within the hollow fixed contact b and extending below the contactplane into the bore of a hollow movable contact c, which forms part of an actuating piston having a closing-spring d. The tip of e and a projecting arcing-ring h are of difficultlyvaporizable metal, as tungsten. To further hinder back-arcing, a rotary motion may be imparted to the quenching medium to produce a partial vacuum at the flow-axis thereof. The resistance f may be given a form flaring to the upper end of silencer g, so as to economize space. In Fig. 3, contact c is solid and e is hollow and is urged by a spring i so that it engages c until, in opening circuit, it is arrested by stop k with its tip projecting below the contact-plane. In Fig. 2 (not shown), e is hollow, but fixed, and projects normally into a recess in the end of c, which, as in Fig. 3, is solid.
