Abstract

451,431. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Feb. 14, 1935, No. 4805. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1934. Addition to 451,233. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas - blast switch as claimed in the parent Specification and in which the compressed gas is produced by the operation of the circuitbreaker, the contacts are arranged, during the initial stage of the switching-off movement, to remain in touch and to move together over a portion of the break path. In the arrangement shown, the nozzle b is carried by a member u slidably mounted, under the control of a spring r, on the end of the tube c surrounding the contact a. The gas blast is produced by a piston x carried by the tube c. When the switch opens, the tube c, nozzle b and contact a are moved downwardly, and the contact d follows the movement, under the action of a spring y, until its further movement is prevented by an adjustable stop z. The tube c continues its downward movement, with separation of the contacts and shortly afterwards the nozzle b is raised either by the air pressure beneath it or by the engagement of a lever s with a cam t, to open the air passage through the nozzle, whereupon the air blast blows out the arc.
