Abstract
547,361. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 25, 1941, No. 12456. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1940. [Class 38 (v)] A pneumatically - actuated, gas-blast switch has a pair of tubular nozzle contacts 9, 10 meeting at 11 in an arc-cooling insulating structure comprising parallel plates 19 spaced apart at the bottom and preferably also along the sides by spacers 20, the plates and spacers being apertured to provide a blast-conduit 21 leading to the contacts by way of passages 22 and apertures 12<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>1</SP>. The contacts are connected to pistons 12, 13 guided in cylinders 14, 15 and operable by the blastgas against the action of reclosing springs 25, 26. In operation, the blast emerging from the nozzles "mushrooms" radially in all directions and forces the arc, regardless of its position, between the plates 19. The stop-cylinders 14<SP>1</SP>, 15' are seated on rubber rings. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the gas valve is operable by a linecurrent transformer and a series isolator is provided.
