Abstract
530,338. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and COX, H. E. June 21, 1939, No. 18104. [Class 38 (v)] A pair of extinguishing-heads 1, 2 mounted on arms on insulators 3, 4 rotatable on a base 5, have each a contact 6 on a spring - retracted piston, whereby the contacts 6 can be mutually separated and the arc blown out by gas-pressure in the manner of Specification 483,996, the gas being admitted from a reservoir in the base through pipes in the insulators 3, 4. Insulator 4 supports a further insulator 8 in which is a resistance connected between the contact 6 in head 2 and an auxiliary contact 7, which may be located adjacent the point of engagement of contacts 6, but, as shown, is formed as a flat blade, opposite faces of which are engaged by contacts 6. Of the two arcs formed, one is shunted by, and the other is in series with, the resistance, whereby both arcs are extinguished, whereupon the insulators 3, 4 are rotated to produce an isolating gap. The resistance-electrode arrangement is also applicable to arrangements employing fixed insulators 3, 4 and a separate isolating switch, as in Specification 508,165.
