Abstract

583,346. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., COX, H. E., and WILCOX, T. W. Oct. 20, 1944, No. 20349. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast circuitbreaker the moving contacts 3, 4 are constituted by a series of contact blades pivotally mounted on the periphery of a hollow stationary member 6' and urged by springs 11 into engagement with fixed hollow contacts 2, 5, the whole being enclosed in an insulating pressure chamber 8 into which pressuregas is admitted through an orifice 7. The gas, after depressing contacts 3, 4, exhausts to atmosphere through the nozzles 9 on the fixed contacts, and orifices 10. Insulating packing segments 12 are provided between the contacts 2, 5 and member 6' in order to prevent such an escape of gas as would prevent the contacts 3, 4 from being depressed. The gas may flow outwards from the hollow members 6', 2, 5, in which case the outer chamber 8 would be dispensed with and the mounting of the contact blades reversed. The invention is also applicable to single-break circuit-breakers. Specification 583,345 is referred to.
