Abstract

1,125,506. Gas blast switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 15 July, 1966 [28 July, 1965], No. 31812/66. Heading H1N. A gas blast circuit breaker has main contacts 30, (24) shunted by a resistor (90) in series with auxiliary contacts 94, 98 and a blast valve 40 arranged in a passage between the two sets of contacts so as to act as a downstream blast Valve for the auxiliary contacts and an upstream blast valve for the main contacts. A high pressure reservoir 18 is supported within a low pressure tank (12), (Fig. 2, not shown). A hollow main bridging contact 30 is rotatable about a hollow stem 18b of the reservoir; within the reservoir a cylindrical auxiliary bridging contact 60 is also rotatable above the stem 18b and has a lost motion coupling 64, 70 with the main bridge 30. The blast valve 40 is slidable within the stem 18b by the contact operating linkage 51 to allow gas to pass from the reservoir 18 past the auxiliary contacts 94, 98 through the stem 18b and hollow contact 30 and then through hollow fixed contacts (24) to the tank (12). A quick release 45, 46, 57 in the linkage allows the valve 40 to reclose rapidly at the end of the contact opening movement. Insulating nozzles 55 surround the main contacts 30, (24), (Fig. 3, not shown). Several circuit breakers may be connected in series in each phase (Fig. 1 not shown).
