Abstract

621,565. Liquid-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., COX, H. E., and POLLARD, A. H. Jan. 29,1946, No. 2877. [Class 38(v)] A liquid-break circuit breaker has a wire wound non-inductive resistance 10 as described in Specification 566,559, [Group XXXVI], mounted adjacent an explosion pot 14 and connected to fixed spring- loaded pivoted contacts 15 by a lead 21 and an annular electrode 25 through which a movable contact 17 passes with rubbing contact. The resistance 10 has such a value as to critically damp the circuit broken, causing the voltage to rise exponentially to its final recovery value, thereby hindering restriking of the arc. Worst arcing conditions are stated to occur at about 2 per cent of the full breaking-current rating and the resistance is 25 per cent to 66 per cent of the value calculated on this basis. A pair of such assemblies of explosion pot and resistance are enclosed by the breaker tank and form one pole, Fig. 5 (not shown). The method of resistance calculation and characteristic curves are set out in the Specification.
