Abstract

513,619. Liquid - blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 3, 1939, No. 7080. Convention date, March 3, 1938. [Class 38 (v)] A switch for opening high-voltage power circuits comprises an insulating arc-chamber containing arc - quenching liquid, relativelymovable contacts separable in the chamber to form a pressure-generating arc, a plurality of independently - operable contacts arranged to form a plurality of breaks in series with the arc located adjacent to exhaust ports in the chamber and substantially in symmetrical relation to the pressure-generating arc, and means for biassing the independently - movable contacts towards closed-circuit position and permitting opening thereof only in response to limited arc pressure within the chamber. The invention is shown in its application to one pole of a conventional oiltank breaker with lead-in insulators 1 and a movable contact rod 9 on one end of a lift rod (not shown). The arc-chamber 4<1> is formed in a strong insulating cylinder 4 supported by insulating members 5 from an adapter 7 on the lead-in conductor 2. Pairs of fixed contacts 12, 13 and 14, 15 are normally bridged by spring- controlled contacts 10, 11 respectively, which by means of interconnectors 16, 19, 22 are placed in series with the pressure-generating contacts 8, 9. Contacts 10, 11 are loosely mounted on extensions 24" of plungers 24<1> from which they are spaced by washers 26. Apertures are provided in the contacts 10, 11, washers 26, and plungers 24<1> so that contact-opening is not retarded. When 9 is lowered and the arc-pressure developed thereby is sufficient to overcome the spring 10<1>, 11<1>, the contacts 10, 11 open and a blast occurs through ports 25 adjacent each break. These contacts reclose when the pressure subsides, leaving the circuit isolated at 8, 9. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a single break at each end is produced by movement of a flaplike, spring - controlled contact, exhaust ports being arranged in the tube-end plates and separated by arc-splitters.
