Abstract
615,031. Gas-blast switches. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN. Aug. 16, 1946, No. 24388. Convention date, May 5, 1939. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast circuit-breaker a tubular movable contact 2 is surrounded with clearance by an annularmember 3, which may be either metallic or insulating according as the voltage is medium or high, and which is so spaced from the end of a fixed nozzle-contact 1, as to define a gas passage having a section substantially equal to the sum of the sections of the contact-bores. The member 3 is secured to an insulating - tube 9 which seals the end of an insulating-tube 7, and has a fluid-tight joint 13 through which the contact 2 slides. The breaker is opened by an insulating connecting-rod 23, at the same time as pressuregas, supplied over a conduit 10 and a recessed collar 8 arranged centrally around the tube 7, enters an annular blast-chamber 11 through spaced apertures 17. Owing to the clearance between the contact 2 and the member 3, the gas-pressure on the interior and exterior of the latter will be equalized, so that when the contacts separate the whole of the arc-gases will be exhausted through the contact-bores, and thereby prevented from coming into contact with the outer surface of the contact 2. Exhaust-orifices 20 in the contact 2 co-operate with a muffle 21, 22, which may be carried by the contact 2 itself or by the base of the tube 7, Fig. 2 (not shown).
