Abstract

568,967. Gas-blast switches. DAVIES, D. R., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 5, 1943, No. 18429. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast switch of the cross-blast type, a tube 13 of resin-impregnated or bonded or other material of high insulating value contains a cylindrical mass 20 of fibre or other gasevolving, arc-quenching material, the tube 13 and mass 20 being apertured to receive the movable contact 4 co-operating with the fixedcontact structure 8, and the mass 20 having additionally an axial passage 21 connected to a source of blast-gas. The upward extension of passage 21 is flared and divided in two by a fibre partition 24 which separates the grids of each pair of a set of semicircular cooling grids 25. The tube 13 is lined with fibre rings which space the grids from the tube and from another, the lining being completed by a ring 29 and sleeve 30 having exhaust openings 33. A damping resistance such as described in Specification 546,625 and of wound form, surrounds the tube 13 and is connected at 38, 39 to the auxiliary contact 36 and fixed contact 8, respectively. An earthed metal enclosure 35 is provided. The Provisional Specification describes a two-part outer tube together with the means for securing them together and to the conductor stem 1, and a modified arrangement of fibre mass.
