Abstract

588,182. Gas-blast switches. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Feb. 2, 1945, No. 2706. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1943. [Class 38 (v)] A gas-blast circuit-breaker suitable for D.C. circuits, comprises main contacts a', a<2>, auxiliary electrodes c', c<2>, and a blast chamber d containing transversely-arranged, insulating arc splitting walls supporting a series of metallic probes on to which the arc is driven in turn by the blast. In Fig. 1, the blast-chamber d is rectangular in section, and the walls g', g<2>, are fitted with bolts h<1>-h<6> and h<11>-h<16> which form the the probes. Pressure gas supplied by way of f blows the arc roots from the main to the auxiliary contacts, and the loop in stages upwards over the probes until it becomes extinguished when sufficiently extended. Resistors may be connected between the probes, or alternatively the walls g<1>, g<2> may diverge in the direction of the blast. In Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), the blast chamber is cylindrical and the probes are diametrically arranged on a coaxial insulating tube. In a modification Fig. 4, having a ring-like fixed contact a' and a movable contact a<2>, two concentric insulating tubes g", g<22> are located inside a cylindrical blast-chamber d, and metallic rings h<21>-h<25> and h<31>-h<35> secured in the surfaces of the tubes serve as probes. In a further modification, adapted for high voltages, Fig. 6, (not shown) the chamber d is sub-divided into three seriesconnected parts by additional transverse walls having metallic coatings on their lower ends, each sub-division accommodating a set of transverse walls and probes.
