Abstract
899,159. Fluid-blast switches. LANGE, E., and NATIONAL INDUSTRI A.S. Aug. 11, 1960 [Aug. 24, 1959], No. 27831/60. Class 38 (5). A switch comprises an axially-movable rod having conducting parts 6, 7 and insulating parts 8, 9, fixed contacts 2 . . . 5 and arcing electrodes 13 . . . 16. When the switch is opened, the conducting parts 6, 7 draw series arcs between the contacts 2, 3 and 4, 5, these arcs moving on to the electrodes 13, 14 and 15, 16. Pressure is produced in the quenching medium in the chamber 1 as soon as the arcs are drawn on the movement of the conducting parts and this pressure is built up when the lower arc is transferred to the electrodes 15, 16. The pressure due to this lower arc forces a blast of cool quenching medium to flow from within a metal tube 12, interconnecting the contacts 3, 4 past the arc transferred to the electrodes 13, 14. The quenching medium may be gas or liquid with or without inert powder. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a three " break " arrangement in which the pressure produced by the central arc forces blasts of cool quenching medium on to the outer arcs.
