Abstract

1321812 Gas blast circuit breakers A REYROLLE & CO Ltd 22 July 1970 [22 April 1969] 20545/69 Heading H1N A gas blast circuit breaker has an explosion chamber 10 in which contacts 16, 17 separate, the resultant arc 18 heating and thereby pressurizing the enclosed electro-negative gas. The moving contact 17 is tubular and, in the closed position, passes over a central rod 25 which is enclosed in an insulating sheath 27 except for its tip 28, which acts as an arcing contact. As the contacts separate, the initial arc 18 is drawn out, so pressurizing the gas, until, as contact 17 passes out of insulating nozzle 19, the arc transfers to tip 28. At the same time the compressed gas discharges through the nozzle and extinguishes the arc. The initial arc 18 is made to spin by oblique slits in the resilient fixed contact 16. The internal surface of the tubular contact 17 may be lined with an insulating tube to prevent premature transference of the arc.
