Abstract

1,149,584. Fluid blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 27 June, 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 29481/67. Heading H1N. The puffer of a fluid blast switch comprises a oylinder 19 and a co-operating piston 16, carrying the moving contacts 11, together with a free piston 56 wound with a coil 54 which is connected in series with the contacts 10, 11 during interruption and respectively attracts and repels similar coils 45, 66 in the piston 16 and cylinder 19 so as to move towards the piston 16 during interruption and thus to increase the fluid blast. The piston 16 carries an arcing electrode 14 insulated from the moving contact 11 and connected to one end of the coil 45; the other end is connected to a conducting strip 50 lying in the surface of an insulating piston-rod 50. The other coils 54, 66 are connected to strips 50, 70, (62) by wiping contacts (51, 61, 67, 68, Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The piston-rod is initially moved by a linkage 27-36 to separate contacts 10, 11; the initial blast transfers the arc to the electrode 14 connecting the coils in series with the circuit. After interruption the piston 56 returns to its rest position, gas flowing into space 40 through a one-way valve 63. The switch is contained in a sealed chamber filled with SF 6 . In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the arcing electrode is connected to the moving contact 11 and the coils are connected in circuit by a separate switch.
