Abstract

1,163,558. Gas blast switches; electromagnetically operated switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 12 July, 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 31989/67. Heading HlN. A gas blast switch has a movable contact 13, withdrawable from a fixed contact 14 to draw an arc through apertures in spaced insulating plates 46, and a piston 5 coupled to the movable contact 13 and arranged to force the gas under pressure towards the arc, the piston 5 and a co-operating cylinder end wall 8 being provided with electromagnetic coils 6, 7 which are connected in series with the switch during interruption so as to assist the movement of the piston. Main contact rods 21 (Fig. 2, not shown and Fig. 8) are carried by the piston 5 and by means of the linkage 10-12 are opened and closed before the arcing contacts 13, 14, the coils 6, 7 being shorted while the main contacts 21, 22 are closed. The switch is filled with sulphur hexafluoride. Instead of attracting coils 6, 7, repelling coils 6, 70 may be used, the coil 70 being embedded in a ring (80) within the cylinder (Fig. 12, not shown).
