Abstract

1423406 Gas-blast switches WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 16 April 1973 [28 April 1972] 18229/73 Heading H1N A gas blast circuit interrupter with hollow fixed and movable contacts 10, 35 has a cylinder 25 slidable over a fixed piston 29, on which main movable contacts 17 are mounted, which on opening movement compresses the gas in a region around the contacts limited by an orifice structure 26 which has an opening closely encircling the contact 10 and a lost motion connection between the cylinder 25 and break contact 35 is that separation of contacts 10, 35 occurs after cylinder movement has produced an increase in gas pressure around the contacts. After the lost motion is taken up an arc horn (41) has its top just within the hollow contact (39) as in Figs 2, 3, not shown. The interrupter is filled with SF 6 and the gas from the hollow contacts is returned to the main chamber 45.
