Abstract

1294063 Gas blast circuit breakers BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 28 May 1971 [24 June 1970] 17881/71 Heading H1N A gas blast circuit-breaker has nozzle contacts 3 and 9 and a piston-cylinder arrangement 7, 17 which compresses gas, e.g. SF 6 , during the breaking operation and which provides the gas blast when the nozzle contacts are momentarily held at an intermediate position, a suitable distance apart. The contacts are opened and closed by lowering and raising cylinder assembly 7 on support members 8. As the contact 9 moves down, the abutment 12b of the insulating member 12, which is held in engagement with housing 2 by the gas pressure, momentarily supports the ridge 9b of the contact 9, this being the intermediate arcing quenching position, Fig. 2 (not shown). The nozzle contact 3 is biased towards contact 9 by spring 4 and during the initial opening, moves with contact 9 until flange 100 engages surface 101 on the housing 2. The breaker has a fixed main contact 5 engaging, in the closed position, main contact 6 associated with a compression spring 13 and insulating sleeve 12. During the closing operation, fixed piston 18 and relatively sliding cylinder wall 7b provide a gas pressure build-up which provides a gas blast before the contacts make.
