In a fluid blast switch of the puffer type the movement of the flow producing piston 40 during heavy current interruption is assisted by attracting coils 41, 55 which carry the load current passing through an arc electrode 66 during the interruption. The piston 40 moves between concentric insulating cylinders 37, 38 and is coupled by rods 51, 52 to a moving contact 32 to which a connection is made through fingers 31a. The arcing electrode 66 is insulated from fixed contact segments 34 by a bushing 64 and connected by flexible lead 69 to one coil 41 mounted in the piston 40. The coil 41 is connected through one rod 51 and a flexible lead 61 to the other coil 55 mounted in the fixed end of cylinder 37; the coil 55 is finally connected by flexible lead 62 to the fixed contact structure. The initial opening movement of contact 32 and piston 40 is by a mechanical linkage (Fig. 1, not shown). The initial blast 49 transfers the arc 63 to the electrode 66 connecting the coils into the circuit to assist the action. The electrode 66 is well spaced from the moving contact 32 during closing preventing an arc striking between them so that attraction of the coils tending to prevent closure of the contacts is avoided. The switch is mounted in a sealed envelope filled with SF 6 .
