Abstract

1,163,557. Fluid-blast switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 29 June, 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 30087/67. Heading HlN. A fluid blast switch has a piston 9 movable in a cylinder 10 to cause the blast and carrying a movable contact 7 and an insulating blast directing nozzle 18, a pair of electromagnetic coils 13, 52 being mounted respectively in the piston 9 and cylinder head 12 and connected together, by way of piston-rods, so as to be energized during interruption so as to assist the driving movement of piston 9. The piston 9 is attached to two piston-rods 24, 40, the coil 13 being connected between rod 40 and an insulated core 20 of rod 40. The rods 24, 40 are joined by a conducting member 44 coupled with lost motion 46 to a cross-bar 25 which is coupled by links (Fig. 1, not shown) to an operating mechanism. The coil 52 is connected between core 20 and a line terminal L2. The lower ends of core 20 and rod 24 carry contacts 21, 37 which are bridged by contacts 22, 37 on cross-bar 25 to short coil 13 in the closed position; in addition a fixed contact 57 connected to L2 engages conducting member 44 to short both coils. During opening, the initial movement of cross-bar 25 separates contacts 21, 22, 35, 37 and then moves member 44 away from contact 57 to insert the coils 13, 52 into series with the main contacts 6, 7. Further movement of member 44, the attached rods 24, 40 and piston 9 is then assisted by the attraction between the coils. During closing, initial movement of cross-bar 25 closes contacts 21, 22, 35, 37 and coil 13 is therefore shorted and inoperative. The switch is mounted in an envelope filled with compressed gas such as SFg.
