Abstract

1,187,447. Vacuum switches; transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 26 June, 1967 [5 Aug., 1966], No. 29321/67. Headings H1N and H1T. A tap changing apparatus includes a vacuum switch 26 which is arranged so that an increase in pressure within the switch envelope 50, e.g. due to entry of insulating liquid, causes the switch to maintain its contacts open. As shown, a lost motion connection is provided by a cage 63 mounted on an actuating rod 60, a contact pressure spring 62 and a shoulder 64 on the movable contact carrying rod 55. A spring 58 tends to open the vacuum switch contacts 51, 52 and the differential pressure acting on the bellows 57 tends to close the contacts. Should the pressure in the envelope 50 rise, the force acting on the bellows is reduced and the spring 58 is able to move the rod 55 downwards against the bias of the spring 62 to open the switch contacts 51, 52. In an alternative arrangement no contact pressure spring is provided, the closing bias due to the differential pressure acting on the bellows normally exceeding the opening bias of the spring 58. Contacts 80, 81 may be coupled to the contact carrying rod 55 and to the actuating rod 60. In the normal operation of the switch, either the contacts 80 or the contacts 81 are open, but when the pressure rises contacts 80 will be closed when the contacts 81 are closed. This completes a circuit for an indicating lamp 76 and for a relay 72 which opens its contacts 73 in circuit with the drive motor 30 of the tap change operating mechanism 28. These contacts are paralleled by contacts 74 which open only at the end of a tap change cycle of operation.
