Abstract
1482961 Vacuum switches WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 2 Sept 1974 [14 Sept 1973] 38261/74 Heading H1N In a vacuum switch of the type comprising, in an evacuated envelope, a pair of contacts 6, 7, between which an arc may occur and a metallic condensing shield 13, 19A, to prevent deposition of metallic vapour from the arcing region on to the inner walls of the envelope, a field coil 19 is provided so that current flowing in this coil during arcing will produce a magnetic field in the direction from one contact to the other to control the arc, this field coil being connected to the metallic condensing shield 13, Fig. 1, or the condensing shield being at least partly in the form of a coil 19A, Fig. 5. In the latter case the shield may be isolated from the contacts, Fig. 7, not shown. The field coil may be inside the evacuated envelope or outside it, and may comprise two subcoils each associated with a respective contact, Fig. 6, not shown. The condensing shield may be wholly in the form of a single helical coil whose diameter may vary along its length, or be in the form of a pair of loops interconnected by a coil, Fig. 7, not shown.
