Abstract

1492577 Vacuum switches WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 9 Dec 1974 [19 Dec 1973] 53094/74 Heading H1N In a vacuum switch having a tubular evacuated insulating envelope containing a fixed and movable contact and a main tubular arcing shield 40 surrounding the contacts, the main arcing shield is made of metal and includes insulating members or insulating material 70 mounted on or disposed on parts of the outer surface of the main arcing shield at least adjacent each end of the shield. In addition the shield may be formed with inwardly or outwardly facing grooves near each end, Figs. 4 and 5, not shown, or auxiliary shields may be associated with and supported by the main arcing shield, Figs. 1 and 2, not shown, the object being to prevent arcing to the outer surface of the shield.
