Abstract
1432060 Vacuum interrupters GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 18 Dec 1973 [21 Dec 1972] 58584/73 Heading H1N In a vacuum-type interrupter for currents greater than 16,000 amp. r.m.s. with any factor of assymetry up to 1À3 and having a pair of disc-shaped contacts, each of diameter greater than 2¢ inches and with a concentric contactmaking button 30 (Fig. 2) at its contact face and four equally spaced slots 32, the centreline 37 of each slot being tangential to the periphery of the button 30 (as in U.K. Specification 1,250,420), the contacts are relatively aligned as shown in Fig. 3 so that the slots of the upper contact are displaced with respect to those of the lower contact (shown dotted), the angle of displacement being from 35 to 55 degrees, preferably 45 degrees. It is stated that this arrangement tends to restrain the arc to a circumferentially-moving path by reducing the tendency for it to jump across from the ends of the fingers 33 to the tubular metal shield surrounding the contacts, the clearance between the two being typically less than # inch in these high-current interrupters.
