Abstract

997,384. Vacuum switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 1, 1963 [Oct. 17, 1962; March 21, 1963; July 30, 1963 (2); July 31, 1963], Nos. 39302/62, 11294/63, 30223/63, 30224/63 and 30410/63. Heading H2B. In a vacuum switch the contact members 8, 9 are formed with engaging annular ridges 11, 12 in which are cut a plurality of radially extending slots 15, 16 which are inclined to the axis of the contacts, forming helical paths for the current and thus inducing a magnetic field between the breaking contacts to cause the arc to travel around ridges 11, 12 until extinguished. In a number of modifications the slots need not extend to the faces 13, 14 of the ridges 11, 12 (Fig. 4, not shown); more than one annular ridge may be provided (Figs. 5, 6, not shown); the slots may extend into the base portion 23 of the contacts (Fig. 7); or a magnetic insert 24 (Fig. 9) may be provided to increase the intensity of the magnetic field. The slots 15, 16 may be filled with a material of high electrical resistivity.
