Abstract
1,227,833. Vacuum switches; switch contacts. SPRECHER & SCHUH A.G. 31 Oct., 1968 [18 Jan., 1968], No. 51608/68. Heading H1N. In a vacuum switch each of the contact assemblies comprises a tubular current-carrying support 9, 9<SP>1</SP> and an arcing electrode having an annular contact-making surface 15, 151 with an outside diameter smaller than the inside diameter of the supports, a plurality of slots 17, 17<SP>1</SP> extending parallel to the axis of the contact assemblies and a central aperture 18, 18<SP>1</SP>. The resulting shape of the current path through the contact assemblies is such as to provide a magnetic field which drives an arc towards the axis of the contact assemblies causing the arc to repeatedly cross the apertures 18, 18<SP>1</SP>. The slots 17, 171 may be wholly radial, Fig. 2 (not shown), or partly radial and partly helical, Fig. 3 (not shown). The central parts of the electrodes around the apertures may be flat, Fig. 1 (not shown), or somewhat conical as shown so as to extend the arc as it moves inwardly. Two series-connected pairs of contact assemblies may be arranged in a single envelope and the electrodes may differ in shape, Fig. 5 (not shown).
