Abstract

1,129,927. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 12 April, 1966 [28 May, 1965], No. 15930/66. Heading H1N. A vacuum switch is provided with an auxiliary arcing electrode 30, to which the arc is transferred from the main contacts 21, 22, the arc on the electrode 30 being subjected to an axial magnetic field which reduces the arc voltage. About a stainless steel portion 17 of the evacuated envelope area pair of oppositely wound coils 42, 44 aligned respectively with one of the contacts 22, 21 and connected in series with the switch. The fields of these two coils interact to provide a strong radial field between contacts 21, 22 and between contact 22 and electrode 30. The radial field is transverse to the initial arc 28 and consequently tends to increase its arc voltage and the arc consequently moves rapidly on to electrode 30 to lie parallel with the field. The arc is caused to move circumferentially around the annular space 34 by means of spiral cuts (52) in contact. 22 and by making the connection 32 to electrode 30 at one point only adjacent to a break (50) in the electrode (Fig. 1a, not shown). In a modification, (Figs. 4-8, not shown), coils (78), (78a) inside the envelope support contacts (70, 72) which are provided with annular arc electrodes (90, 92) which cooperate with a fixed cylindrical electrode (88) to produce two series-connected arcs each subjected to an axial field. Electrode (88) and the contacts (70, 72) are slit longitudinally and the contacts are pierced to reduce eddy currents. Helical slots (139) in the edges of electrode (88) and spiral slots (142) in electrodes (90, 92) cause the arcs to be driven around the annular electrodes. Stainless steel vapour condensing shields are fitted.
