Abstract

993,987. Vacuum switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 6, 1964 [April 30, 1963], No. 17000/63. Heading H2B. A vacuum switch has a shield 17 which prevents deposition of metal particles from the arc on the surface of the insulating part 1 of the housing, the inner surface of the shield being corrugated to increase its surface area and hence the proportion of the particles which adhere to it. The corrugations take the form of a plurality of deep V-shaped grooves 22 cut into an annular body of 21 of copper or stainless steel, the peaks 23 being smoothly rounded. In an alternative form the corrugations are built up from a number of different pieces 25, 26, 27, 28. The contacts 5, 8 of the switch are slotted at 14 to move the arc around the tips of them.
