Abstract

1,250,420. Vacuum switch contacts. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 28 Feb., 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 10859/69. Heading H1N. Each disc-shaped contact 17, 18 of a vacuum switch is provided with a contact making button 30 concentric with the outer periphery of the contact and is slotted to provide a plurality of circumferentially extending fingers 33, the slots 32 extending, from spaced points on the periphery, tangentially to the outer edge of the button 30, beyond the point at which they first touch the edge and then turning inwards (36) below the edge of the button. The slots 32 are straight and have at least half the width of the fingers 33, the latter having rounded tips. The contacts 17, 18 may be of copper; the buttons 30 may be integral or separately formed of a copper-bismuth or copper-lead alloy. The buttons are annular and high resistance inserts 40<SP>1</SP> are provided so that the arc is driven on to the fingers 33 where it is rotated by the mangetic forces due to the helical current paths.
