Abstract

1,210,600. Vacuum switches; contacts. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 April, 1969 [26 April, 1968], No. 19850/68. Heading H1N. A slotted annular contact member for use in vacuum switches has a multiplicity of copperbismuth alloy contact elements 5 brazed into an annular groove or grooves 19, 21 in the face of the contact member. The annular ridge forming the contact member is first divided by a deep circular groove 17 and then slots 11 are cut to divide each ring into a plurality of fingers 9; the slots 11 are inclined at about 45 degrees to the contact surface and may be radial (as shown) or tangential to a circle of diameter less than half the internal diameter of the respective ring. The contact is then turned to provide the two shallow grooves 19, 21; brazing metal shims are inserted into the grooves followed by the elements 5 and the whole is then heated in vacuo to braze the elements 5, one to each of the fingers 9. A vacuum switch (Fig. 3, not shown) has two such contact members with oppositely inclined slots 11.
