Abstract

1,100,259. Vacuum switch contacts. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 Feb., 1966 [16 Feb., 1965], No. 6674/65. Heading H1N. In a vacuum switch contact similar to that described in Specification 997,384 and having a slotted annular ridge providing an annular contact surface divided into discrete contact areas, the part forming the annular ridge is made resilient to permit relative displacement of the contact areas to accommodate surface irregularities between mating contacts. The contact may be formed from a resilient alloy of copper with iron, zirconium, titanium or chromium. Alternatively, it may be cast, in copper, about a resilient steel skeleton having fingers extending into the ridge between the slots; the skeleton may be of perforated steel strip. In another alternative, fibres or wires of stainless steel, molybdenum, tungsten or a nickel-iron alloy, are embedded in the copper casting either in a random fashion or aligned parallel to the slots; in the latter case, wires of 0À5 mm. diameter spaced 1 mm. apart are suitable. In yet another alternative, the copper is cast between cylindrical shells of molybdenum so that the shells serve to stiffen the contact after the slots have been cut. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 997,384.
