Abstract

1,081,550. Vacuum switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Nov. 5, 1965 [Nov. 16, 1964], No. 46971/65. Heading H2B. A vacuum switch is provided with a pair of arcing contacts 15, 16 and a pair of main contacts 18, 19 in parallel therewith, the main fixed contact 18 being mounted upon a metal condensing shield 20 so that in the closed position shield 20 carries the load current. The shield is adjacent to a glass envelope portion 11 and is thus able to radiate heat through it; this increases the current carrying capacity of the switch. The fixed main contact 18 is slitted to provide a number of fingers. The movable contact 19 is sealed to the envelope by bellows 32 and is attached to a U-shaped connector 22 connected to a flexible conductor 23. The movable arcing contact 16 is slidable within contact 19; is sealed thereto by bellows 37; is connected thereto by flexible conductor 46 and is biased to its closed position by a spring 16b. The legs of connector 22 are coupled to insulating links 31 which are drawn downwards to first separate main contacts 18, 19 and thereafter, when contact 19 has moved to engage a nut 42 on contact 16, to separate the arcing contacts. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) two sets of main contacts, one at each end of the envelope, are provided, these being connected in series by the shield 20. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown) only the contact 19 at one end is movable, the shield being spring-loaded to follow this contact until the contacts at the other end are separated.
