Abstract
1,156,310. Gas blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 12 June, 1968 [31 July, 1967], No. 27899/68. Heading H1N. A gas blast switch has a cylindrical insulating casing 3 mounted on a mechanism casing 4 and containing a fixed piston 43 attached to a fixed contact 40 and a movable co-operating cylinder 71 providing the gas blast, the cylinder being directly coupled to an operating linkage 5, 19 while a movable contact tube 30 is coupled to the piston by a lost-motion coupling 22, 55 so that the contacts do not separate until after the gas pressure has been built up. The fixed piston 43 is provided with opening 43b through which the gas passes to the contact space; a coil of metal strip 45 for cooling the gas and an insulating nozzle 67 for directing the flow of the gas. Both contacts are hollow for the escape of the gas. The casing 3 is filled with SF 6 and is made of epoxy resin lined with a material resistant to the arc products.
