Abstract

1,158,560. Fluid blast switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 29 June, 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 30086/67. Heading H1N. In a fluid blast switch the moving contact assembly 20 moves with an insulating nozzle 14 surrounding the contacts and having a throat 15 spaced downstream from the moving contact assembly. The nozzle 14 is attached to a cylinder 7 co-operating with a fixed piston 8 to produce the fluid blast. The switch may be immersed in liquid such as oil or gas such as CO 2 or SF 6 . Both fixed and moving contacts 4, 20 are hollow allowing the compressed fluid to flow though them. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the outlet 16 (31) of the nozzle closely surrounds the fixed contact 4 and slides over it. In another modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the contact member 24 is solid and contact 20 vents through passages (43) in the solid end 12 of cylinder 7. The piston and cylinder end may have embedded coils (50, 55) connected in series with an insulated arcing contact (60), Figs. 4, 6, 7, not shown) which under heavy current conditions assist movement of the portion as described in Specification 1,149,660. In another modification (Fig. 9, not shown) a resistance 100 in series with the insulated arcing contact is enclosed in the piston.
