Abstract

1,086,546. Gas blast switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 12, 1966 [Sept. 14, 1965], No. 31218/66. Heading H2B. In an axial blast circuit breaker the upstream arcing electrode 70 is provided with a current carrying coil 80, which creates a radial magnetic field at the electrode surface 74 to cause the arc terminal to move around it and which is so constructed that when a heavy current flows through the electrode the coil contracts axially and in so doing moves the electrode 70 towards the downstream electrode 45. In addition movement of the electrode 70 opens an auxiliary blast valve 90 causing gas to flow through the hollow electrode. The electrode is moved rapidly back to its rest position, when the arc is extinguished, by the coil 80 and the gas pressure on valve 90 to prevent flash-over as the voltage recovers.
