An electrical switch device of the gas blowing type, comprising a pair of spaced electrodes between which an arc is established during the interruption of a circuit, one of said electrodes being able to move relative to the other of said electrodes, said first electrode having a normal position in which a predetermined first magnitude of said other electrode is spaced, means for directing a gas jet through the space between said electrodes while said arc is present between them, to thereby help extinguish said arc, characterized in that an assembly is provided that responds to the current of the arc passing through said first electrode to move said first electrode towards said other electrode when the current of the arc through said first electrode exceeds a predetermined value, an arrangement to hold said first electrode in a spaced position of said other electrode e a second predetermined quantity substantially less than said first quantity during the passage of strong currents through said first electrode and the arc, and means responsive to a fall in said arc current to a predetermined value to return said first electrode to its normal position spaced in said first predetermined magnitude of said other electrode.
