Abstract

The fixed contact (14) of the circuit interrupter is a ring projecting into a tube made from a derivative of polytetra-fluorethylene and mates with a mobile contact (10) that fits in the tube. To interrupt the circuit, a plug (26) of the same material as the tube is introduced into the tube. An arc forms between the two contacts and extends into the small space between the plug and the inside wall of the tube. Gas, released by the heating of the tube, starts to extinguish the arc. Two magnets (30, 32) around the fixed contact and in the mobile contact, cause the arc roots to rotate. This prevents repetitive tracking inside the tube.
