Abstract
548,103. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and GIMSON, C. F. July 10, 1941, No. 8736. [Class 38 (v)] A gas-blast switch wherein an electrode 10 is connected through a resistance 9 to the movable contact 2 during the initial part of its opening movement, has an auxiliary adjustable electrode 15 mounted in the stream adjacent the fixed contact 1 and connected to it by strap 16, whereby the effective distance between 10 and 1 can be adjusted to suit the gas-pressure and voltage and characteristics of the circuit. Contact 15 preferably screws into an insulating extension 7 of the contact 1. The part of electrode 10 away from the arcing tip 11 is covered by insulation to confine the arc, and insulating discs 14 serve to protect the rubbing contact 13. The arcing- tip 11 is adjusted to a greater axial distance from contact 1 than is required by circuit conditions, final adjustment being effected by electrode 15.
