Abstract
627,480. Cut-outs. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 18, 1945, No. 18371. Convention date, July 18, 1944. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVII] An arc-extinguishing chamber 20 comprises gas - evolving expulsion tubes 13,14 enclosing arc-runners 17, and having aligned slots forming an arc-extinguishing passageway 16, which is itself lined with gas-evolving material. A fusible element 21 within the passageway 16 extends through openings 23, 24 in the tubes 13, 14 and is connected to line terminals 3, 4. The tubes 13, 14 are preferably surrounded by slotted tubes 18 of magnetic material, so as to increase their bursting-strength and accelerate the upward movement of the arc. Other forms of arc-extinguishing chamber having divergent expulsion tubes and convergent passageways are also described. Applications to circuit. breakers, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown) (see Group XXXVII) and lightning arresters, Fig. 5 (not shown) (see Group XXXV) are also described.
