Abstract
813,683. Gas-blast switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 3, 1956 (Feb. 4, 1965], No. 3344/55. Class 38 (5). A circuit-breaker com. prises a tubular fixed contact 3 and a movable tubular contact 2 mounted in an insulating housing 1 to which pressure gas may be applied at the lower end from an air receiver and valve (Fig. 3, not shown). The gas flow is indicated by the arrows and raises the contact 2 by piston action, the arc formed at 10 being transferred to an arc probe 4 situated in the contact 2. The upper end of the contact 3 is tapered and the adjacent part of the inner wall of the housing 1 is constricted so that the blast in the annular passage 6 is directed into the bore 7. The dimensions of the contact 3 are such that between # and “ of the gas passing upwards to the arc region flows through the bore 5. The contact 2 has a constriction at its lower end and the dimensions are preferably such that the exhaust passes in approximately equal amounts through the bore 7 and annular passage 8. A spring (Fig. 3, not shown) restores the contact 2. For very high voltages the contacts may be immersed in compressed air, in which case the breaker is controlled by an exhaust valve mounted at the opposite end of the housing 1 to which the air receiver is connected.
